But just what exactly are triglycerides, we hear you ask. Triglycerides – also known as neutral fats – are the major energy fuel of hepatocytes (liver cells) and skeletal muscle. Cognitive Function

Although the brain relies primarily on glucose for energy, it can also use fuels such as monocarboxylic acids, lactate and ketones to maintain energy homeostasis. Studies suggest that medium chain fatty acids can cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and be oxidised by the brain. Therefore, medium chain fatty acids may provide a direct brain fuel source via the generation of ketones without raising blood glucose levels.

Weight Loss

Consumption of a diet rich in MCT oil results in a greater loss of adipose tissue due to increased energy expenditure and fat oxidation. In a recent study, MCT oil was proven more effective in weight loss in a control group consuming MCT oil as opposed to a group consuming olive oil when part of a weight loss program. MCT oil can be incorporated into your diet simply by switching out your current cooking oil.

Digestive, Liver and Cell Health

MCT oil works in the digestive tract by increasing coverage of energy needs by fat. MCT oil is a practical way of protecting the liver and intestine during endotoxemia. An animal study found that rats that developed liver disease from corn oil consumption were associated with a decreased death rate when given MCT oil. They also have protective effects on the gut.

In cells, MCT oil may promote stability, membrane fluidity, cell mobility, formation of receptors, binding of ligands to their receptors, gene expression, and cell differentiation (Kono et al, 2008).
